Company
History
In 1976, a group of developers from the University of
Virginia wanted to create a digital medical record keeping system for a large
teaching hospital in Virginia. They formed a company and began designing a
software system to track information and documentation related to patient
visits and treatments. The first version of the software was released in 1982
and allowed for tracking of the patients in a hospital, as well as the supply
chain, providers and other internal hospital records. The software became
popular among healthcare providers and soon after, a business model based on
selling software to hospitals was developed. In 1989, the first version of the
software was sold to an intensive care unit (ICU) in a hospital in France. The
same year, we began sales in the United States and by 1992, the company had
grown to 1000 employees. Over the years, we have expanded our offerings to
include solutions for other industries and vertical markets. Today, we are the
world’s largest healthcare software company with more than 19,000 employees
worldwide and over $5 billion in revenue.
